Skinwalker Ranch
Decades of eyewitness testimony, scientific investigation and unexplained phenomena at the most studied paranormal location in the American West.
Skinwalker Ranch lies in the remote Uintah Basin of northeastern Utah, a wide expanse of high desert bordered by low ridges and scattered scrubland. The property covers roughly five hundred acres and appears, at first glance, to be an ordinary cattle ranch. Corrals stand beside a modest homestead and pasture stretches across the basin floor beneath an immense western sky. Over several decades, this isolated land has become associated with a remarkable concentration of reported phenomena. Witnesses have described strange lights and unidentified craft moving silently across the sky, glowing orbs drifting over the fields, encounters with enormous wolf-like animals, sightings of large unknown creatures, disturbances inside the ranch house resembling poltergeist activity, and brief openings in the air that some observers believed resembled portals. The sheer variety of reports has led investigators to describe Skinwalker Ranch as a convergence zone. In this place, multiple forms of unexplained activity appear to occur within a single location.
The name of the ranch comes from a Navajo tradition. In Navajo belief, a skinwalker is a malevolent witch capable of assuming the form of animals or other shapes. Stories of such beings have circulated throughout the American Southwest for generations. The wider Uintah Basin has long had a reputation among local communities as a place where unexplained events occur, a reputation that predated the ranch's national attention. Discussion of skinwalkers is often avoided in Navajo culture, as the subject is considered dangerous and speaking about such beings is believed by some to invite their presence.
Modern accounts began in 1994 when Terry and Gwen Sherman purchased the ranch and moved their family there to raise cattle. Within months, they began experiencing events that they struggled to explain. Strange lights appeared over the pasture at night. Livestock behaved unpredictably. The family often described a persistent sense that something was watching from the surrounding darkness.
The first incidents centred on predators targeting the cattle. Calves disappeared from the fenced pasture during the night, and several animals were discovered dead with injuries suggesting the presence of a powerful animal. Yet tracks were often limited or absent, and the surrounding ground frequently showed little disturbance.
One afternoon, the Shermans encountered the animal that would later become one of the most widely reported incidents connected with the ranch. An enormous wolf-like creature approached the livestock enclosure in broad daylight. The animal showed little fear and allowed several members of the family to stand only a few feet away while it examined the animals in the pen. Witnesses described a creature far larger than any wolf known to inhabit the region, with heavy shoulders and a thick grey coat.
The animal pushed its head through the fence and seized a calf. Terry Sherman retrieved a high-powered rifle and fired at extremely close range. The bullet struck the animal but produced little visible effect. Sherman fired again. One shot appeared to strike the creature in the shoulder, tearing away a small piece of fur. The wolf released the calf, turned toward the family and looked directly at them before calmly walking away across the pasture.
Sherman and others followed the animal’s tracks across the field. The prints continued for a short distance before ending abruptly in the open ground. There were no signs that the creature had turned or changed direction. The trail stopped.
The piece of fur recovered at the scene was later examined but produced no clear identification.
As the months passed, the Shermans began seeing unusual lights in the sky over the ranch. Glowing spheres appeared above the fields and moved silently across the basin. On some nights, the lights hovered for several minutes before accelerating away at speeds that made it impossible to follow them with the naked eye. Witnesses also reported triangular craft and dark objects moving high above the valley.
Disturbing discoveries involving livestock soon followed. Several cattle were found dead under circumstances that raised serious questions about how the animals had been killed. Some bodies displayed precise cuts and missing tissue. No blood was found at the scene. In other cases, organs appeared to have been removed with unusual accuracy. Livestock mutilations had been reported throughout the American West for decades, yet the incidents at the ranch added to the growing sense that something unusual surrounded the property.
One incident involved several cows that disappeared from an open pasture overnight. The animals could not be located anywhere on the ranch until investigators heard movement coming from a storage building that had been closed earlier in the day. Looking through a narrow gap in the wall, they saw the missing cattle standing inside the structure. They were all crammed in there in such a way that there was no space to move. It would be almost impossible to get all of these cows into the building this way.
The animals were completely motionless. Witnesses described them as standing rigidly in place, as though frozen. When the door was opened, moments later, the cattle suddenly became frantic and rushed toward the exit, forcing their way past one another in an attempt to escape. The building had been secured from the outside and showed no signs of forced entry.
Disturbances were also reported inside the ranch house. Objects were found in places where no one remembered leaving them. Doors opened or closed without explanation. On several nights, members of the family reported hearing voices, laughter or animal-like growls coming from empty rooms or from the darkness outside the house.
Word of the events gradually spread beyond the ranch. Journalists and researchers began to hear reports of unusual activity. In 1996, the property was purchased by American businessman Robert Bigelow, who had maintained a long-standing interest in unexplained phenomena. Bigelow established the National Institute for Discovery Science (NIDS) and assembled a team of scientists and investigators to study the ranch.
The research team installed surveillance equipment across the property, including night-vision cameras, motion sensors, radiation detectors, and electromagnetic monitoring instruments. Investigators lived on or near the ranch for extended periods and carefully documented every unusual occurrence.
One method involved placing livestock in monitored enclosures to act as bait. Cameras and sensors were positioned around the pens while researchers observed from nearby locations. The goal was to draw whatever might be responsible for the disturbances into a controlled environment where it could be recorded.
On several occasions, investigators reported seeing glowing orbs drifting toward the bait pens before abruptly changing direction or disappearing. Livestock inside the enclosures sometimes became extremely agitated despite the absence of any visible predator.
Researchers also recorded unusual electromagnetic readings at several points around the ranch. Instruments occasionally registered sudden spikes in radiation or electromagnetic energy that could not be linked to any known environmental source. In one incident, a team member reported physical symptoms after approaching an area where unusual readings had been detected.
Among the most unusual reports involved a section of sky above the ranch where witnesses claimed to see a dark triangular opening appear. Observers described the opening as resembling a window suspended in the air. In several accounts, witnesses believed they could see another sky beyond the opening. Some reports described shapes moving into or out of the opening before it disappeared.
Investigators also documented unusual aerial objects above the ranch. Witnesses described a translucent mass drifting across the sky that appeared to change shape as it moved. The object was informally referred to by investigators as a blob due to its irregular appearance.
Experiments were conducted by directing lasers into the night sky to measure atmospheric conditions. During one experiment, observers reported that the beam appeared to bend or distort as it passed through a specific region above the property.
In another experiment, GPS tracking sensors fitted with long streamer tails were dropped from a helicopter to measure air movement above the ranch. Several of the devices appeared to strike something unseen in mid-air before continuing their descent toward the ground.
There were also reports of aircraft entering the airspace above the ranch following sightings of unusual objects. Witnesses described helicopters resembling military Black Hawk aircraft flying low over the property without visible markings or active transponders.
Investigators reported that unusual disturbances, including equipment failures and sudden unexplained activity, sometimes followed attempts to dig into certain areas of the ranch. These events led to speculation that the ground beneath the property might play a role in the phenomena.
One particularly unusual observation involved a dead cow that was left in an open field for study. The carcass remained in place for many months. Local scavengers avoided it, and the body showed little visible decomposition during that time. Tissue samples taken from the animal were examined in a laboratory and produced no unusual findings.
Despite years of monitoring and extensive documentation, the investigation produced limited physical evidence that could conclusively explain the events. Photographs, sensor readings and witness testimony suggested unusual activity had occurred, yet no single explanation accounted for the wide range of phenomena reported.
Interest in the ranch increased further when it became known that the United States government had examined reports connected with the property. During the early 2000s, the Pentagon funded the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program, an initiative that studied unidentified aerial phenomena. Individuals associated with the programme later confirmed that Skinwalker Ranch had formed part of the wider research effort. Many details of that investigation remain classified.
Stories also circulated that individuals connected with the ranch experienced disturbing events beyond the property itself. Some reports claimed that members of Robert Bigelow’s family encountered troubling incidents during the period when he owned the ranch, contributing to the belief among some investigators that the phenomena might extend beyond the boundaries of the land.
In 2016, the ranch was purchased by Utah businessman Brandon Fugal. Under Fugal’s ownership, the property has continued to be studied using modern monitoring equipment, including drones, radar systems, thermal imaging cameras and electromagnetic sensors. The ongoing research has been documented publicly in the television series The Secret of Skinwalker Ranch.
Accounts connected with the ranch now span a wide range of reported phenomena. Witnesses have described unidentified aerial objects crossing the sky, glowing spheres appearing over the fields, encounters with large animals that do not match known wildlife, and distortions in the air resembling openings suspended above the ground.
Debate continues among scientists, researchers and observers regarding the meaning of these reports. Some investigators attribute many of the incidents to environmental conditions, unusual wildlife behaviour or misidentified aerial phenomena. Others point to the repeated testimony from ranchers, researchers and visitors over several decades and argue that the concentration and variety of events in a single location warrant continued investigation.
Nearly thirty years after the first reports from the Sherman family, Skinwalker Ranch remains one of the most discussed locations in modern paranormal research. The ranch itself remains quiet for long periods, an isolated stretch of desert pasture beneath the open sky of the American West. Its reputation endures through the accumulation of witness testimony, scientific investigation and unanswered questions that continue to surround this remote corner of the Uintah Basin.
