UFOLOGY Glossary Series - M
A series to help people new to the topic understand the terms, concepts, and language used in the study of UFOs and alien phenomena.
The world of ufology is vast, mysterious, and often overwhelming for newcomers and seasoned researchers alike. With decades of reports, theories, terminology, and classifications, understanding the language of UFO research is essential for making sense of the phenomena.
This Ufology Glossary is designed to be a living, evolving reference guide for anyone interested in the study of unidentified flying objects, alien encounters, and the deeper mysteries of our universe. Whether you're exploring government disclosures, diving into abduction accounts, or just trying to decipher terms like “CE-5” or “anti-gravity propulsion,” this glossary is your companion through the strange and fascinating world of UFO phenomena.
Each entry is organized alphabetically and includes clear, concise definitions to help demystify the language used by researchers, experiencers, and theorists across the field.
We begin with the letter A, and from there, the glossary will continue to grow—entry by entry, mystery by mystery.
Men in Black (MIB)
Mysterious figures often dressed in black suits who allegedly visit UFO witnesses or researchers to silence or intimidate them. Described as emotionless, robotic, or off-putting in behavior. Their origins are debated: government agents, alien hybrids, or something else entirely.
Missing Time
A hallmark of many abduction cases where individuals lose hours (or more) with no memory of what occurred. Often discovered when a witness notices unexplained time gaps or through hypnosis and regression.
Mass Sighting
A UFO event witnessed by a large group of unrelated individuals, often in urban areas. Famous examples include the Phoenix Lights (1997) and the Ariel School Encounter (1994).

Magnetometer Disturbance (UFO Effect)
Anomalies detected in magnetic fields during or after UFO sightings. Researchers have used magnetometers to measure environmental fluctuations possibly linked to propulsion systems.
Metallic Craft (UFO Type)
Refers to sightings of clearly physical, often reflective or solid-appearing flying objects—typically discs, triangles, or cigar-shaped. These are distinguished from glowing or orb-like phenomena.
Microwave Burns (Close Encounter Evidence)
Physical symptoms reported by close encounter witnesses, including reddened skin, nausea, and eye damage—believed to be caused by directed energy or microwave-like radiation from UFOs.
Multigenerational Abduction
A phenomenon where multiple members of the same family, across generations, report abduction experiences. Suggests long-term monitoring or experimentation by non-human entities.
Mojave Incident (Abduction Case)
A highly detailed alien abduction case from 1989 involving a married couple, Steve and Dawn Hess, who experienced a terrifying encounter while camping in California’s Mojave Desert. The couple reported being immobilized by a beam of light, levitated into a craft, and subjected to physical and psychological procedures by various alien beings. Their memories, recovered through hypnosis, describe telepathic communication, medical experimentation, and out-of-body experiences, making it one of the most deeply explored and chilling abduction cases in modern ufology.

Morphing Craft
UFOs that appear to change shape, size, or structure mid-flight. These are sometimes reported as shifting from one geometric form to another, suggesting advanced material or dimensional properties.
Monotone Communication (Abduction Reports)
A common description of how beings (especially Greys) communicate—telepathically and in a flat, emotionless tone that lacks human variation.
Military Retrieval Team (Crash Response)
Units allegedly tasked with locating, securing, and recovering downed UFOs or crash debris, often arriving within hours of an event. Their rapid deployment has led to conspiracy theories regarding black ops and secret programs.
Missing Aircraft (UFO-Linked Disappearances)
Cases where planes or pilots vanish during UFO encounters, often under mysterious circumstances. Notable cases include Frederick Valentich (1978) and Flight 19 (1945).
Mind Scan (Abduction Phenomenon)
A process described by abductees in which alien beings appear to “read” or probe thoughts and memories, often by making intense eye contact or through telepathic means.
