UFOLOGY Glossary Series - O
A series to help people new to the topic understand the terms, concepts, and language used in the study of UFOs and alien phenomena.
The world of ufology is vast, mysterious, and often overwhelming for newcomers and seasoned researchers alike. With decades of reports, theories, terminology, and classifications, understanding the language of UFO research is essential for making sense of the phenomena.
This Ufology Glossary is designed to be a living, evolving reference guide for anyone interested in the study of unidentified flying objects, alien encounters, and the deeper mysteries of our universe. Whether you're exploring government disclosures, diving into abduction accounts, or just trying to decipher terms like “CE-5” or “anti-gravity propulsion,” this glossary is your companion through the strange and fascinating world of UFO phenomena.
Each entry is organized alphabetically and includes clear, concise definitions to help demystify the language used by researchers, experiencers, and theorists across the field.
We begin with the letter A, and from there, the glossary will continue to grow—entry by entry, mystery by mystery.
Orb (Luminous Orb/UFO Subtype)
A glowing spherical object often reported in UFO sightings. Orbs may appear in clusters, move intelligently, or change size and color. Some are thought to be surveillance probes or energy-based craft.
Observer Effect (UFO Encounter Context)
The idea that the presence or mental state of a witness may influence or attract UFO phenomena—suggesting a potential consciousness-based link between humans and the phenomena.
Open Contact
A hypothetical event in which extraterrestrials make their presence known to humanity in a public and undeniable way, as opposed to secretive or individual encounters.
OZ Effect
A sudden sense of stillness and detachment from reality often reported during close UFO encounters. Sounds may become muted or vanish completely, and time may seem to slow or stop—creating a dreamlike, eerie atmosphere.
Official Denial (UFO Cover-Up)
The practice of governments or military agencies dismissing or explaining away UFO sightings, often through misinformation or reclassification (e.g., weather balloons, flares, etc.).
Otherworldly Beings
A general term used to describe alien entities that do not fit known categories (e.g., Greys or Reptilians). These beings may appear humanoid, ethereal, or completely unfamiliar, and are often reported in high-strangeness cases.

Orbital Maneuvering (UFO Capability)
Refers to UFOs observed entering or exiting Earth’s orbit with abrupt, gravity-defying movements. Such sightings suggest advanced propulsion beyond known human technology.
Observation Craft
A theorized category of UFO designed for passive monitoring of Earth activity. These are often small, silent, and remain just within visual range without engaging directly.
One-Way Telepathy
A form of communication during alien contact in which the witness receives thoughts or instructions but is unable to respond mentally or verbally. Common in abduction accounts.
Organic Craft (Biological UFO Hypothesis)
A speculative theory that some UFOs may be living organisms or partly biological—growing, healing, or behaving like sentient beings rather than machines.
